Should I start smoking again?

Post  redsunset on Fri Jan 11, 2008 6:42 am

I gave up smoking just over a year ago now, and I would love to say that I feel all the better for it, but to be honest I don't, and neither have I saved any of the money that I used to spend on fags, and I definitely don't drink more than I used to, in fact quite the opposite, as I find most pubs very dreary places now, since the ban.

All my friends still smoke, a few of them even smoke more than they did before as they say the ban has made them all the more determined to do what they want.

Now I am in a bit of a predicament. I hate being cast in with all these anti people we keep hearing about, as I am definitely not anti smoking. I believe in freedom, and anyone who believes in freedom must be against the ban, but, should I start smoking again, as a sort of protest?

Redsunset, I don't think anyone can tell whether you should start smoking again or not, it is entirely up to you, and that is exactly what the majority of smokers object to, not being able to say "if I smoke or not, it is entirely up to me" Because this ghastly draconian law has decreed otherwise.

Oh, they will say, of course you can smoke, as long as you do it in the worst possible places immaginable, i.e. outside in the cold and rain. I wonder how many of these smirking b......s will still be smirking when the summer comes, and smokers dominate all the best outdoor areas?

Let us know redsunset, when you have come to a decission regarding if you are going to take up smoking again or not....remember, it's your choice

I once stopped smoking for six months and it was hell from start to finish. I am not prepared to put myself through that again, so your descision depends on how you feel happiness wise. I still remember the glory of that first fag after so long. Money wise, I now have a plastic machine which you put tobaco in and then feed in a tipped paper tube which produces an almost perfect cigarette. This has cut my costs by more than fifty percent.
Postage can be arranged if anyone is interested and can't find in England.

Sabot, the machine you mention sounds interesting, but I am ashamed to say that I can't roll a cigarette myself, does this machine do the actual rolling for you and do you have a link where I could look at it?

It isn't a rolling machine. It is made entirely of rigid plastic. You lift the top, spread tobacco, close it and the feed a ready made tube in one end. They cost 8 Euros here so would be about 5 pounds in England. It is not like the original old rolly machines. Can't show you one I'm afraid but ask in your local tobacconist, It must be possible to buy them in England. One of mine is made by Rizla. I am going to Google it and see what I get.

Just done it. Google "Rizla cigarette machine" and go to one of the web sites and you will see what they look like. You can buy them on line and the tubes as well. I use the Drum yellow packet tobacco. Don't be tempted to put too much tobacco in because it will clog up the machine. Practice makes perfect. Let me know how you get on. Tee Hee, we will beat the B"s

I just googled the Rizla machines as you suggested but all the sites that came up are in the USA, I can't find any in the UK.

This one is in the USA but looks very good, have you seen it? http://www.ryomagazine.com/winter2004/rollers.htm

No it's not that machine. It's called a Cigarette Tube Machine. U.S.A. and dollars are not a problem if you have a debit or credit card

Good site for roll your own stuff

www.rollups.co.uk

I tried the machine you're talking about but it didn't work too well (for me) as I was using Golden Virginia and apparently, I was told, you have to use baccy suitable for the machine. I think it has to be a bit dryer than Golden, Old H etc. Anyway I use a different type of machine that's available from the above. Your open the machine up, spread the baccy along the band in the machine & you can use a tip if you want - you then close the machine up, put the fag paper in, roll the band round till just the glue bit of the paper is showing, lick give it another little roll, open the machine up and hey presto. Sounds long winded & a bit of a chore but I roll about 20 at a time and it takes about 8-10 mins once you get the knack. They also sell little plastic filters that you put on the end of the roll up which filter a bit of the tar, stops the yellow fingers syndrome and stops the fag paper sticking to your lips if you hold the fag in your mouth for too long (which I do if I need to do something with both hands & I'm having a fag at the same time). Think more women would go for the plastic filter than men but I don't think the government have banned men from putting filters on their roll ups - YET. There's even a section at the bottom of the machine for the fag papers. I've saved a fortune by switching from ready mades to roll ups - especially with the odd trip to Belgium. If, like me, you can't roll a decent fag have a look at the kit available on the site

I don't do rollups. Does anyone know where I can buy duty free ciggies, apart from France or Spain that is. Someone told me that you can send for them from the States?

I did start smoking again!

Post  stuwho99 on Mon Mar 10, 2008 6:51 am

I have smoked my pipe quite peacefully for over 40-years but in 1993, partly due to financial pressure from the Recession, I quit! A year later I made the judgment that I actually enjoyed smoking my pipe and, with great delight, bought some tobacco.

By that time I had developed loose teeth and my gums were sore. Because of the gums, my first visit was to my G.P. He gave the game away! One in six smokers who quit develop Vincent's Gingivitus and loose teeth. Sure enough, six months later a tooth had to come out!

We never see advertised the health consequences of quitting smoking, do we?
