Would you like to see the ban overturned or amended?

Do you think the ban on smoking in enclosed places should overturned, or do you think it should simply be amended to give us both smoking, and non smoking venues?

This ban is completely unfair and is segregating people who were once friends. It is also against our human rights.
If the anti smokers want fresh air so much, they should go outside with their drinks, and breath it in during the rain and cold, not us.

Ban

Have patience, The ban will be amended eventually. Large corperations are already feeling the pinch and this will not be allowed to continue. It is a great pity that small businesses will suffer most but that is an unfortunate fact of life. Look to France which will probably be the first to come up with a solution.
Personally I am not much fussed since I rarely go out in winter, and in summer I prefer to sit outside anyway, in which case the the pavements and sidewalks will take on a much more festive air with tables and chairs and pretty parasols. I did notice when I was last in England that some places now have this arrangement with rather large gas heaters set under umbrellas. The smokers seige is already underway. Forget not that we smokers are very inventive people. It's the effect of nocotine on the brain. I know a few non smokers who could benifit from this, most of them are incredibly boring.

The smoking ban should disappear completely.

I do think that non smokers (the ones that are particularly bothered by a bit of smoke) should be accommodated, but that is down the the licencee, and is none of the states business.

Everything should just go back to how it was back in the daze of normality. If they want to introduce rules about smoking in specific places, thats fair enough, but their agenda is to control human behaviour, so to say that it should be amended is to haggle with them, and thats not the way to do it.

I hate this smoking ban so much.

leafar, I agree with you about not being the states business. But these days the state tries to control everything we do, from smoking to eating to driving, parking etc etc etc . We need to get up off our arses and start hitting back at these people where it hurts, i.e. in the balot box

In total agreement, they preach one thing and practice another. All they really want is to be a horrible as possible to smokers just because they don't like the smell. I wonder if they complain about the smell of vehicle exhaust fumes as much as they do cigarettes?

Their sick excuse is always that exhaust fumes are outside whereas cigarette smoke was inside. They should try telling that to the babies in pushchairs, whop have no option than to breath in the disgusting fumes from massive lorries, as their mothers push them along the high streets.

All as before

Post  botswana7 on Sun Jan 27, 2008 1:21 pm

The smoking experiment should go back to how it was at the time of the ban, there were generally smoking and non smoking areas inside pubs, clubs, cafe's etc the owner set down the rules and these were usually adhered with by the public.

Amended

Post  rosiew on Mon Feb 11, 2008 8:18 am

I'd be happy to see the ban amended rather than overturned. I can see it must be nice if you're a non-smoker to have pubs, clubs and restaurants you can go to now where you won't have to put up with the smell of smoke. I just can't see for the life of me why smokers shouldn't have their own spaces too.

I must say, all the non-smokers I speak to are much more amenable to this argument than to the argument that the ban should be overturned. We need to face facts - a lot of people like the new smoke-free atmospheres - but the majority of reasonable people also think it's unfair for us to be left out in the cold totally. What's needed is a reasonable compromise, such as allowing smoking in a proportion of pubs and clubs and restaurants, and allowing the public to choose which they visit.

So I think we'd all be better off lobbying for the ban to be amended, not overturned.
